What’s in the box
200 creative restrictions. One rule: make theatre inside them.
Each card sets a single restriction, a rule about space, sound, body or story, and asks your students to create within it rather than around it. Draw one card and you have a starting point. Draw several and you have the shape of a whole devised piece.
Scenic 50 cardsSpace, props, costume and the audience relationship.
Technical 50 cardsLight, sound, rhythm and projection, made live by performers.
Performance 50 cardsBody, voice, gesture, interaction and character.
Narrative 50 cardsStructure, sequence, time and perspective.
Try it now
Pull a card. Make something.
Draw a card and give your group two minutes to answer it. No discussion first: just make something.
24 cards to try here, from across the four decks. The full box has 200.
Why restriction works
Less to work with. More to make.
The obvious choices disappear
Give a group a genuine limit and the first, safest idea is off the table. Better ones take its place.
Students stop waiting and start deciding
No more blank-page discussion. The card is the starting point, so groups make something in minutes.
Beyond dialogue and realism
Ensembles work with image, rhythm, space and the body: bold, stylised theatre made with only what is in the room.
When you strip theatre back to its essentials, young people become braver, bolder and more inventive. Give them less and they create more.
What working within limits builds
- Collaboration
- Adaptability
- Focus
- Resilience
- Creative risk-taking
- Trust in the ensemble
Skills for the stage, and for life beyond it.
The method
Five steps. Any spare five minutes.
Pick a card
At random for surprise, or by choice to target a skill.
Set a time limit
Two minutes for a warm-up, twenty-five for a devising block.
Apply it fully
Even when it breaks your first idea. Especially then.
Share and name it
What did the constraint make you do that you wouldn’t have?
Decide what to keep
The rule can go. The discovery stays.
One deck, a whole year
From a two-minute warm-up to a six-week devising project
Starter
One card as students arrive. Two minutes in pairs, before the register is done.
Devising stimulus
Start a new piece from a card, before any talk of theme or subject.
Rehearsal reset
When a scene stalls, draw a card and run it again for ten minutes.
Plenary
“How would today’s work change if we had to do this?”
Assessment task
Set a card, or a small hand, as the basis for devising or evaluation.
Cover lesson
Hand a few cards to a cover teacher. The structure runs itself.
Ensemble building
Cards that restrict movement or interaction build trust fast.
Staff CPD
A low-stakes way for colleagues to experience devising themselves.
