About this event

An ISTA festival is an immersive theatre experience where young people collaborate, create, and perform together. It is a non-competitive environment where students are encouraged to take creative risks, experiment, and learn through process rather than outcome.

Working in mixed ensembles with students from different schools and backgrounds, and alongside professional artists, they co-create original theatre through a hands-on, experiential approach. A shared global challenge, guiding story, and cultural experience connect the work to the people, place, and ideas of the host location.

Learning happens through doing. Participants devise, experiment, and make creative decisions together, taking ownership of both process and outcome. Every voice matters, and every contribution shapes the work.

Confidence grows as the experience unfolds. Young people develop their artistic voice, think more deeply, and build meaningful connections with others and the world around them.

They leave with new skills, fresh perspectives, new friendships, and the experience of creating something that is truly their own.

What to Expect at an ISTA Festival

Your ISTA experience

The artistic experience

At an ISTA festival, creative work is shaped through the connection of ideas, place, and practice, guided by the ISTA Ensemble Method and Festival Framework.

Each festival is connected through a shared Global Challenge. For 2026–2027, Rooted & Reimagined invites young people to explore how we honour the roots that shape us while imagining new futures.

At the same time, every festival is shaped by its own unique combination of location, artist team, and ensemble, creating an experience that can only happen in that specific place and moment.

Working as part of an ensemble, students learn with and from one another as they respond to this provocation and explore a guiding story. A shared cultural experience connects them directly to the host location, bringing them into contact with its people, environment, and stories.

These elements are woven into the creative process, influencing what is made, how ensembles collaborate, and how ideas are developed and expressed.

The result is a learning experience that is creative, connected, and deeply human, fostering confidence, empathy, and a stronger sense of self and others.

The cultural experience

Each ISTA festival includes a shared cultural experience that connects students to the host location and provides real-world inspiration for the work they create together.

From historic landmarks and museums to live performances and site-based exploration, these experiences offer powerful starting points for creative inquiry.

Live performance

Students attend a live theatre performance and unpack their experience through guided reflection and dialogue. The performance becomes a shared reference point within the festival, supporting students as they connect performance, interpretation, and their own creative practice.

Details about the performance and viewing experience will be shared with participating schools closer to the event.

The artists

ISTA festivals are led by a diverse team of professional artists from around the world, including theatre-makers, performers, directors, and educators. They bring a wide range of cultural perspectives and creative practices, guiding students through the process of making original work. As facilitators, they support, challenge, and inspire each ensemble, helping young people develop their ideas, take creative risks, and shape work that is unique to their experience.

Artist teams are shared in the event Information Pack, which is sent to participating schools in the lead-up to the event.

Educator workshops

While students take part in the festival, accompanying educators engage in a dedicated specialist workshop led by one of the ISTA artists. This session supports their own professional development, offering time to explore theatre practice, reconnect with creative process, and take away practical ideas for the classroom or rehearsal space. Workshop leader and session information will be confirmed closer to the event.

Educators also take part in a collaborative session focused on sharing practice, ideas, and resources, creating space for dialogue and exchange within a global community of arts educators.

Travel, visas and accommodation

Arrival & Departure

Arrival: Non-local Participants should plan to arrive on the evening of Thursday 14 January 2027.

Departure: Participants should not plan to leave the host venue before 3:45pm on Sunday 17 January 2027.

IMPORTANT: Travel should be arranged to align with the full festival schedule, including time for arrival, check-in, and readiness to begin, as well as departure after the event has fully concluded.

Festival schedules cannot be adjusted to accommodate individual travel plans. Late arrivals or early departures impact the ensemble process and the shared creative work, as groups rely on full participation throughout the festival.

Getting there

The venue, POSK, is located on King Street in Hammersmith, West London. Participants should arrange their own local transport from their arrival airport or accommodation to the venue.

  • Recommended Airport: Heathrow Airport — Piccadilly line directly toward central London; alight at Hammersmith, then walk/bus to POSK. This is usually the simplest airport route. Other London airports are also accessible by public transport: Gatwick (train to London Victoria, then District line to Ravenscourt Park), Stansted (Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Hammersmith & City/Circle line to Hammersmith), Luton (train to central London, commonly St Pancras International, then Piccadilly line to Hammersmith), and London City (DLR/Tube into central London, then District/Piccadilly/Hammersmith & City line toward Hammersmith/Ravenscourt Park).
  • Nearest Tube Station: Ravenscourt Park (District line) — the most convenient station for POSK, a short walk via Ravenscourt Road / King Street. Hammersmith Station (Piccadilly, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) is a good alternative, especially from Heathrow or central London.

Transfers

  • ISTA will not arrange transfers for this event. Participants should arrange their own local transport from their arrival airport or accommodation to the venue.

Travel time

  • Travel times vary by airport and route; Heathrow via the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith is typically the most direct.
  • Please book travel accordingly and allow for ample time to travel to and from the airport/station. Check the TfL Journey Planner shortly before travel, as Underground and rail routes can be affected by engineering works, strikes or service changes.

Accommodation

Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation in London. ISTA recommends booking a hotel near the venue.

Local Transport

Participants should arrange their own local transport to and from the venue, as well as to the theatre venue in the evening of the live performance.

  • Nearest Tube: Ravenscourt Park (District line), a short walk to POSK. Hammersmith Station (Piccadilly, District, Circle, Hammersmith & City) is a good alternative — from there, walk west along King Street or take a short bus toward Ravenscourt Park / Chiswick.
  • Bus routes serving King Street include 70, 207, 218, 266, 440 and E3. Night routes include N7, N11, N207 and N266. Search for stops near King Street / Ravenscourt Park / Hammersmith depending on your starting point.
  • For participants arriving by National Rail, the venue is not directly beside a major rail station, so the Underground is recommended for onward travel. Suggested connections: London Victoria (District line westbound toward Richmond/Ealing Broadway, alight at Ravenscourt Park); London Paddington (Hammersmith & City or Circle line to Hammersmith, then walk/short bus); London King's Cross / St Pancras (Piccadilly line to Hammersmith, then walk/short bus); London Waterloo (District line connection via Westminster or Embankment, then continue to Ravenscourt Park); London Liverpool Street (Hammersmith & City or Circle line to Hammersmith).

Visa Requirements

Participants and schools are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary travel documentation to enter the United Kingdom.

Visa and entry requirements vary depending on nationality and passport type. Some participants may need to apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa before travelling, while others may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Participants should check the official UK Government website well in advance of travel to confirm the documentation required for their individual circumstances.

Visa and ETA applications can take time, so we strongly recommend starting the process as early as possible.

Please note: an ETA allows eligible travellers to travel to the UK for short visits, but it does not guarantee entry at the UK border. Participants should ensure they apply only through the official UK Government website.

If you require supporting documentation, please contact the Event Manager well in advance.

Important Communication Information

ISTA business days are Monday to Friday, and we aim to respond to all emails within three business days.

ISTA staff do not monitor emails on weekends (Saturday & Sunday) or public holidays. If a staff member is working at an event, response times may be longer than usual.

Meals and refreshments

Only lunches will be provided at this event (3 days)

Participants will be responsible for arranging their own evening meals.

Please note this does not include an evening meal the night before the event starts.

What to bring

Appropriate attire

Participants should bring clothing suitable for physically active workshops during the day (athletic wear, PE kit, performance blacks, etc.).

All attire, both during the event and during time spent at the hotel or in the local area, should be respectful of the host country, host school, and the diverse international community of participants.

ISTA festivals bring together young people and artists from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and participants are asked to dress with awareness and consideration for others.
