About IB DP Film Student Handbook

The Diploma Programme Film Student Handbook is the definitive companion for students studying IB Diploma Programme Film. Developed in partnership with the International Baccalaureate (IB) and published by ISTA Global Arts Learning, this comprehensive handbook supports every stage of the course, from the first lesson through to final assessment.

Written by Sharon McDonagh and Dr Mike Bindon, two internationally recognised IB film educators with extensive experience in curriculum development, teacher training and classroom practice, the handbook is fully aligned with the current IB DP Film curriculum (first assessment 2024). Combining authoritative guidance with practical learning activities, it helps students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed throughout the course.

Rather than simply explaining the syllabus, the handbook actively engages students in the creative and analytical processes that define IB Film. Built around inquiry-based learning, each chapter contains activities, discussion prompts and practical tasks that encourage students to investigate, create, reflect and refine their understanding. Whether used in the classroom or for independent study, it complements teacher instruction while empowering students to take ownership of their learning.

Throughout the book, students are encouraged to make meaningful connections between film theory, production and critical analysis. Dedicated spaces for notes, sketches, planning and reflection transform the handbook into a personalised record of each student's creative journey, making it an invaluable companion throughout the two-year course.
