Staging Shakespeare: From Text to Transformation

About this event

Join ISTA for this two-day immersive professional development studio designed for educators eager to reimagine Shakespeare through innovative, inclusive, and student-centred approaches.

In this dynamic, hands-on workshop, participants will explore and apply playful, accessible strategies that bring Shakespeare’s works to life for learners of all styles and backgrounds. Through devising, physical theatre, inclusive casting, and interdisciplinary approaches—including digital performance—educators will uncover fresh ways to connect timeless themes such as power, identity, justice, and ambition to students’ lived experiences and global contexts.

Participants will gain drama-based techniques to help students embody Shakespeare’s language and emotional worlds, amplifying the core elements of TEAM (Tension, Emotion, Atmosphere, and Meaning). The workshop also invites critical reflection on traditional and contemporary pedagogies, examining how Shakespeare is taught and how it can be reimagined for today’s diverse classrooms.

Collaborate with fellow educators from around the world, exchange ideas, and build a toolkit of strategies to empower young people as creative interpreters, critical thinkers, and confident performers of Shakespeare.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this two-day studio, participants will be able to:

Explore and apply innovative and playful approaches that make Shakespeare’s works accessible, relevant, and engaging across a range of learning styles and classroom contexts.

Create inclusive and imaginative learning experiences that connect Shakespeare’s themes—such as power, identity, justice, and ambition—to students’ lives and current global conversations.

Examine Shakespeare’s texts through contemporary lenses, such as devising, physical theatre, inclusive casting, digital performance, and interdisciplinary frameworks, to deepen students’ creative and critical engagement with the plays.

Apply drama-based techniques to help students understand and physically embody Shakespeare’s language, characters, and emotional worlds—amplifying the elements of TEAM throughout.

Critically reflect on traditional and modern pedagogies, evaluating how Shakespeare is positioned in education and how TEAM can serve as a framework for reimagining his work for diverse, contemporary learners.

Collaborate with fellow educators to exchange ideas, strategies, and resources—building a global network of creative Shakespeare practitioners committed to innovation, inclusion, and student voice.

ISTA’s Professional Development & Learning (PD&L) studios are immersive, hands-on training experiences designed for arts educators and school leaders. These two-day, face-to-face events focus on practical skills, creative strategies, and progressive approaches to teaching and learning in the arts. Facilitated by expert practitioners, each studio offers experiential learning, collaboration, and real-world application to support curriculum development, enhance student engagement, and deepen professional practice.

Unlike traditional PD, ISTA’s PD&L studios are designed for impact—whether you’re an arts teacher seeking specialist tools, a practicing artist refining your methodology, or a school leader exploring innovative pathways in arts education. All participants receive an official ISTA Certificate of Attendance, with sessions aligned to global best practices and led by internationally recognised arts education professionals.
