About this event
An ISTA festival is an immersive theatre experience where young people collaborate, create, and perform together. It is a non-competitive environment where students are encouraged to take creative risks, experiment, and learn through process rather than outcome.
Working in mixed ensembles with students from different schools and backgrounds, and alongside professional artists, they co-create original theatre through a hands-on, experiential approach. In Siracusa, this includes working on site within historic spaces, where the architecture, atmosphere, and history directly shape the creative process. A shared global challenge and guiding story connect the work to the people, place, and ideas of the festival.
Learning happens through doing. Participants devise, experiment, and make creative decisions together, taking ownership of both process and outcome. Every voice matters, and every contribution shapes the work.
Confidence grows as the experience unfolds. Young people develop their artistic voice, think more deeply, and build meaningful connections with others and the world around them.
They leave with new skills, fresh perspectives, new friendships, and the experience of creating something that is truly their own.
Accessibility
Please note that this event may present challenges for participants with mobility concerns. A significant portion of the programme takes place outdoors, both during creative sessions and when travelling between venues on foot. Many of Ortigia's heritage buildings feature steps and staircases at their entrances and throughout their interiors, and the festival hotel does not have a lift. Please contact the event manager if you would like further information regarding accessibility.
