About this course
What this course covers
Harnessing the Power of Concepts in Middle Years Theatre explores how theatre teachers can move beyond teaching skills, activities and content to make the deeper learning within their classrooms more intentional and visible. Theatre is already an inherently conceptual subject: students explore ideas such as identity, communication, perspective, relationships, culture and artistic intention every time they create, perform and respond. This course provides practical tools for bringing those ideas to the surface and helping students understand not only what they are doing, but how and why their learning matters.
Across four modules, you will explore concepts, conceptual understandings and conceptual questions, and consider how practical theatre skills can become pathways towards deeper, transferable learning. Through clear examples and filmed case studies with practising theatre educators, you will see how conceptual inquiry can be applied to performance forms and techniques, practitioners and movements, and theatre traditions and cultural contexts.
Grounded in concept-based curriculum and instruction, the course is designed to complement rather than replace the theatre curriculum you already teach. You will leave with practical approaches for designing learning that connects skills with understanding, encourages meaningful inquiry and helps students recognise and articulate the bigger ideas beneath their theatre experiences.
